![]() ![]() ![]() Introducing Macrium Reflect X
Macrium Reflect X vs Reflect 8: Speed and Resumable Imaging Test
Disk Imaging A disk image is a compressed file that contains a sector-level copy of whole disks and partitions. The disk image contains all of the information required to completely restore those selected disks and partitions. Additionally, a disk image of an operating system disk will include all of the information required to restore the operating system to an operational state, as opposed to a file-level backup, which cannot be used to recover an operating system. Reflect X creates an accurate and reliable Image of a hard disk or the partitions on the disk. In the event of a partial or complete system loss, you can use this image to restore the entire disk, one or more partitions, or even individual files and folders. During the imaging process, Macrium Reflect copies the contents of entire volumes including a reference to their physical location on the storage device to an image file. You can store the image file on local or network drives, or removable drives connected using USB or eSATA and assign the storage to be protected by Macrium Image Guardian. ![]() ![]() Differential and Incremental Images Reflect X can create Full, Differential, and Incremental images to optimize backup speed and disk space Full Differential Incremental requirements. When you image a volume for the first time, it is referred to as a image. A "Full" image file contains the data Full stored in the volume. Reflect X provides two alternative methods of all backing up your data after the initial full image has been completed:
See more - Creating a Disk Image File and Folder Backups A file and folder backup will create a backup of specific files and folders. This can be especially useful for only backing up specific files and folders from a larger volume, whereas a disk image would back up the entire volume. Unlike other backup solutions, Reflect X can back up open and locked files by using Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS). To create a backup, select the files and folders you want to backup, apply File and Folder filtering File and Folder criteria to include and exclude files and/or folders, and Reflect X creates a compressed backup file that can be restored directly or browsed using Windows Explorer. Storing backups in a single file is beneficial because it can be compressed, encrypted and stored elsewhere with ease. As you can for images, you can also create, and file and folder backups to optimize backup Differential/Incremental speed and disk space requirements. File and folder backups are ideal if you only wish to backup specific documents, photos or music, rather than your whole system. ![]() See more - Creating a File and Folder Backup Disk Cloning With Macrium Reflect, you can clone your system disks to enable you to swap failed disks out of your system and get things back up and running again in minutes. The process is identical to "imaging" but instead of storing data to a file, it replicates volume contents and disk structures to an alternative device. When the cloning process is complete, the target disk is identical to the original and contains a duplicate of all volumes, files, operating systems and applications. Cloning a disk is particularly useful to upgrade an existing hard disk and in the event of a hard drive failure, you can simply replace the failed disk with a clone and have your system up and running again in minutes. However, cloning a disk is not an efficient way of backing up your data if it changes frequently because the clone will only contain one point in time as there is no 'Backup Chain' history that is available with disk images. Also, "disk images" can be compressed and saved to any location. Rapid Delta Cloning (RDC) The concept of Rapid Delta Cloning (RDC) has been something that has been thought about for quite some time here at Macrium Software. We wanted to build a cloning solution that would effectively and rapidly copy only the differences between the source and target file systems. The advantage of this is obvious: RDC offers a similar performance increase as an incremental disk image offers over a full image and enables regular clones to be a viable and fast disaster recovery solution. How Does Rapid Delta Cloning Work? The NTFS file system on the clone source is compared with the file system on the target disk. The two file systems are first verified that they originated from the same format command, and then the target NTFS file system structures are analyzed for differences. All the NTFS file system structures are copied to the target disk, and any that do not exist or have been modified on the target disk cause the data records for each NTFS file or object to be copied as well. The result is an "incremental" clone applying only file system changes detected between the source and the target. Note: RDC works with NTFS file systems only. All other file systems will perform a full clone. RDC is not available when shrinking partitions during a clone; a full clone will be performed instead. See more - Rapid Delta Cloning Rescue Media The Macrium Reflect rescue media is used when a version of Macrium Reflect can not be accessed to perform a restore, including scenarios like Windows failing to boot and bare metal restores. As a result, the rescue media is extremely important. Macrium Software strongly recommend creating rescue media as soon as Macrium Reflect has been installed; in the event of a disaster, having rescue media will make the recovery process much easier. The rescue media settings show the settings included in the WIM and the status of the WIM. The WIM is the Windows image that is used when creating the Macrium rescue media. Once the WIM has been built, it will not require rebuilding unless the settings displayed here (selected Windows PE/RE version, Macrium Reflect version, etc) change. This enables new rescue media to be easily created without having to build a new WIM each time. ![]() ![]() See more - Creating and Managing Rescue Media Restoring Images Reflect X restores disks or their partitions exactly as they were when the backup was taken. The restore process also enables you to expand or shrink partitions if the restore target is a new disk and a different size to the original. If your whole system becomes corrupt, you can load Reflect X and restore your image despite being unable to boot Windows. You can boot from the Reflect X Windows PE rescue media and use Reflect X to find and restore your images. Reflect X can restore images from directly within Windows using the installed Macrium Reflect application. The steps that are required vary depending on the destination of the restore. If the restore will not overwrite any in-use system partitions, the restore can be performed entirely within Windows as described below. If the restore will require in-use system partitions to be overwritten, for example, restoring the currently booted operating system to an earlier point in time, then the restore must be performed from within the rescue environment. The images that will be restored on the 'Existing Backups' tab of Reflect. Reflect X will search recent backup locations for image files and display them on the 'Existing Backups' tab. If the backup that will be restored is not visible, additional paths can be searched by using the 'Edit' button. When a restore will not overwrite system partitions, for example, when restoring data partitions back to their original location or restoring system partitions to a new location, the restore can be performed entirely within Windows. When restoring incremental and differential images, only the image that you want to restore needs to be selected. Reflect X will automatically handle previous backups in the set, meaning that images can be restored in a single pass. ![]() ![]() Restoring File and Folder Backups File and folder backups are a convenient way to quickly backup specific files and folders. They are not intended for operating system backup; as a result, will generally not be used when recovering a failed operating system. This means that most often, file and folder backups will be restored using the Macrium Reflect LTSC application that has been installed in Windows; the steps to do this are detailed in this article. File and folder backups can be restored using the rescue media by following the same steps while booted using the rescue media. The file and folder backup that will be restored on the 'Existing Backups' tab of Reflect X. Reflect X will search recent backup locations for image files and display them on the 'Existing Backups' tab. If the backup that will be restored is not visible, additional paths can be searched by using the 'Edit' button. When restoring incremental and differential file and folder backups, only the backup that you want to restore needs to be selected. Reflect X will automatically handle previous backups in the set, meaning that backups can be restored in a single pass. See more - Restoring File and Folder Backups ![]() Macrium ReDeploy - Restoring to Dissimilar Hardware Macrium ReDeploy is designed to overcome issues with the Windows boot process that can occur when attempting to boot the Windows operating system on dissimilar hardware. There are a variety of scenarios where a Windows operating system may need to be moved to new hardware, for example:
How does ReDeploy work? Discovering hardware and association with matching device drivers is time-consuming and must be undertaken while Windows is installed. It is skipped during a normal Windows boot, making the boot delay acceptable. Early in the boot process, the boot loader loads the Windows kernel (the core of the operating system) and the critical drivers required to get Windows up and running. If the new hardware configuration requires a new driver to read the disk containing the operating system, then Windows will fail to boot. When the kernel and critical drivers are loaded, the kernel starts. The kernel and its associated hardware abstraction layer (HAL) must match the motherboard for best enabling. Drivers are optionally loaded to handle specific central processing unit (CPU) features. For a stable system, the driver must match the hardware, in this example, the CPU model. ReDeploy detects changes to critical system features, locates relevant drivers, and injects them into your Windows operating system so it boots. ReDeploy makes the complex process of getting an offline Windows operating system running as easy and intuitive as possible. It does not, however, install the complete driver set for the new hardware. You can complete the non-boot critical driver installation for devices such as network and graphics adapters when your Windows operating system boots on your new hardware. See more - Restoring to Dissimilar Hardware with Macrium ReDeploy Rapid Delta Restore (RDR) The concept of Macrium Rapid Delta Restore RDR has been something that has been thought about for quite some time here at Macrium Software. We were aware of competing technologies that offer fast restore capabilities, but wanted to build something better.
Note: RDR works with NTFS file systems only. All other file systems will perform a full restore. RDR is also not available when shrinking a partition during a restore; a full restore will be performed instead. See more - Rapid Delta Restore Macrium Changed Block Tracker Macrium Reflect Changed Block Tracker (CBT) reduces the amount of time it takes to perform incremental and differential images by monitoring the changes to an NTFS formatted volume in real-time. This is especially relevant when a file system contains very large files, such as virtual hard disk (VHD) files, where speed improvements are significant and can reduce the Incremental image time from hours to minutes or even seconds. Implemented as a kernel-mode filter driver, sitting below the NTFS file system driver, MRCBT can intercept all I/O requests to the logical volume and maintain a record of which blocks have changed. Traditionally, Macrium Reflect has detected changes to the file system by comparing the NTFS Master File Table (MFT) on the source volume with the MFT of the most recent image in the backup set. While this method is one of the quickest solutions available, we do not consider it an optimal solution when used in a continuous incremental scenario, especially if multi-GB files are present in the file system. In addition to numerous performance improvements, starting with version Macrium Reflect 7.2, CBT tracks TRIM events. These events are generated by NTFS when a file is deleted or moved and are used by CBT to optimize the image by excluding the relevant blocks from the backup. When CBT is first enabled, it captures an internal NTFS attribute that represents the number of times that the file system has been restarted. By tracking changes to this value, MRCBT can detect if a volume has been modified in any environment where MRCBT is not operating (e.g., on another computer or operating system). When CBT is enabled and Reflect detects that the 'Restart' attribute is correctly sequenced, the subsequent incremental and differential image can be generated by comparing the changed block database (created by CBT) on the logical volume with that stored in the previous image in the chain. This is indicated by a blue running-man icon displayed in the Reflect UI. See more - Macrium Changed Block Tracker Macrium Image Guardian Macrium Reflect X includes the Macrium Image Guardian (MIG) feature, which provides ransomware and accidental deletion protection for Macrium backup files that are stored locally to where Macrium Image Guardian is running. Macrium Image Guardian protects your backup files from unauthorised modification. MIG works by preventing unauthorized delete or write operations from being performed on Macrium backup files by any process that does not have a valid Macrium code signature. This ensures that in the event of a ransomware infection, Macrium backup files will be available to be restored. All other process attempting to update existing backup files will be denied access. ![]() ![]() See more - Macrium Image Guardian Macrium viBoot Macrium viBoot enables you to instantly create, start, and manage Microsoft Hyper-V and VirtualBox virtual machines using a Macrium Reflect image file as the basis of the virtual machine storage sub-system. Macrium viBoot can be used to boot a Macrium image as a virtual machine, enabling near instant failover in the event of a disaster, validation that a Macrium Reflect image will be bootable when restoring, or to retrieve data from applications installed in a bootable image. Macrium viBoot Demonstration
Note: viBoot only supports Microsoft Hyper-V and Oracle VirtualBox running on a minimum of Windows 8.0 or Windows Server 2012. How does Macrium viBoot work? Macrium viBoot is built on technology that allows it to instantly present a Macrium Reflect image file as a Microsoft Virtual Disk (.VHDX) or VirtualBox/VMWare (.VMDK) file. The type of virtual machine to create is automatically detected by viBoot based on the virtualization software installed on the host. When creating a new Hyper-V or VirtualBox virtual machine, Macrium viBoot will create two Microsoft Virtual Hard Disk (.VHDX) or VirtualBox (.VMDK) files, respectively, for each of the disks described within the selected Macrium Image file. The first VHDX/VMDK file is incomplete and only contains enough information to describe the disk layout and a signature to mark it as a Macrium viBoot VHDX/VMDK. The data for the disk is retrieved from the Macrium Image File by the Macrium Virtual Disk Provider filter driver as required. Because the data is not stored with the VHDX/VMDK, its size will never exceed a few megabytes. The second VHDX/VMDK file is a standard differencing disk that will receive any modifications made to it during the lifetime of the virtual machine. No changes will be made to the source .MRIMGX file. As with any differencing file (VHDX or VMDK), this file can grow dramatically in size, depending on the usage of the virtual machine. These disk files (VHDX or VMDK) are stored in the designated Macrium viBoot repository and remain open until the Macrium viBoot virtual machine is deleted from within viBoot. Note: The default location for the viBoot Microsoft Hyper-V VHDX files is C:\ProgramData\Macrium\viBoot. This is configurable from within the Macrium viBoot UI. Both VHDX and VMDK files related to VirtualBox VMs are stored under C:\ProgramData\Macrium\viBoot\VirtualBox Using Macrium viBoot to mitigate disasters

I am a long time user of Macrium Reflect v7 and v8. The switch to subscription based is a bit bad news for users as they now have to pay a yearly fee to upgrade. Anyway, the comparison of v8 and v10 as shown in the video is awesome and indeed version X is much improved. I have availed of the 30-day trial way back and the hype is true that X is better ad faster than v8. Interface is the same and the speed is the determinant. X interface should be improved as mentioned it looks the same as v8. There is also no available user guide and videos. When testing I relied on old videos and the X - KB articles in tandem with the old user guide. Macroum should complete the docs and videos for X since this is a new version. For users who are not that technically inclined, these guides are a must. The KB articles of X isn't enough for me. I want to join and win a license so I can continue using version X and not go back to v8. Thank you for this giveaway Macrium Software!
