One of the hard and fast rules of the human condition is: "You only get out of a thing or a person as much as you put into it/them." - So, wake up and start investing your time, labor, or money.
(Exception to rule: Only the very beautiful or powerful people find themselves the exception to this rule. But, many times they will be hated sooner or later if they don't reciprocate.)

"Work while it is yet day, for the night cometh on when no man can work." - PARAPHRASE OF "John 9:4" from the Messiah.
Please bear with me and read on:
I am a retired psychologist (age 66) who has heard countless ideas about how to motivate people to work/function successfully within society. ...It continues to be one of the great mysteries of humanity worldwide, hence the existence of this thread, and whole sections of libraries.
This I can promise you, If you do not work as hard and as smart as you can for as long as you can, then you will regret it when you lose your health from old age or by accident; (when your personal "night cometh.")
Self-respect and respect from others are lost as you age if others do not see you struggling to maximize your opportunities until you are exhausted. Without self-respect and the respect/honor of others, shame will rule your life and mind. Rich or poor, all are susceptible to this outcome.
The only true answer to motivation I have ever found is:
In the final analysis, "The pursuit and achievement of your happiness are based on motivating your own arse."
Coming to know this will either make you happy or sad based on your willingness to accept the suffering of the human condition presented to you.
"Enough said to the wise."
