AMD has a smaller package for Navi 31

AMD has reportedly developed a graphics processor that encompasses Navi 31 die into a smaller package.

A 40x40mm package would include one Navi 31 GDC and six MCDs, two of which are dummy dies. Such an intriguing design was supposedly made by AMD to help board partners prepare for the Navi 32 launch. The company has been shipping such prototypes, an interim replacement GPU to board partners for months now, claims Moore’s Law is Dead.

This way, AIBs could develop their upcoming upper mid-range Radeon RX 7800 series without the actual Navi 32 GPUs being available at the time. As we know, Navi 32 was long expected to appear later. Such rumors started to appear already last year, indicating that we might not see N32 before N31 and N33, both of which were already released.


 
The Navi 31 turned 32 pictured above has six MCD dies, but the GPU can only support 256-bit memory bus. Such a bus width allows 4/8/16/32 GB memory configurations to be enabled, and as we know, some AIBs like ASRock have already confirmed RX 7800 XT should feature 16GB of memory.

Since AMD has already created a smaller version of Navi 31, it is possible that this type of processor will end up on smaller platforms, such as laptop motherboards. Technically, nothing should prevent AMD from using this type of die for an even more powerful Radeon RX 7900M series that could potentially compete with NVIDIA RTX 4080 Laptop GPU. The leaker claims that such a design is already in the labs, but it is unclear if gamers will ever get a taste of it.
