Searching Photos
The speed of the search depends on the size of the disk/file as well as the selected options. The user should adjust the settings as closely as possible to suit the user needs to speed things up considerably.
  • Scan Method / Options

Allows the user to select between various different presets that cover most search use cases. Each preset will auto-adjust the remaining settings.

  • Ignore file sizes smaller

Allows the user to select the minimum  file size. Images smaller than this value will be ignored.

  • Ignore photos where width and height is below
Allows the user to select the minimum image dimensions. Images smaller than this value will be ignored.

  • Maximum photo file size

Allows the user to select the maximum  file size. Images bigger than this value will be ignored.

  • Common photo and Internet files (JPG, PNG, TIF, GIF, PDF)

Enable this option to search for the most common image  file types.

  • RAW files (Digital camera files)

RAW  files are usually created by high-end cameras. Enable this option to search for these
    file types.

  • Modern photo files (HEIF, JPEG2000, WEBP, JXR)
These formats have only recently been introduced. Enable this option to search for them.

  • Rare graphics files (TGA, PCX, SGI, APCDOC, PSD, ...)
These formats are for special use cases. Enable this option to search for them. Once you have selected a source and settings, click "Search Photos!" to begin the search process.

Note: Depending on the selected source, the search may take a while and ensure that no other application is modifying the source during this process.

Recovered files
Recovered files will be stored in the folder specified in the program's settings with a sub-folder created for each new search. The user may select a different output location under "Configuration". Results will be displayed as thumbnails. Select or de-select individual entries to include/exclude them and click "Keep selected Photos" to save the files permanently.

NOTES:

Like any recovery software, the speed of the search depends on the size of the source. The wait is long and exhausting. And then, there is the "hit-and-miss" thing that is always present. Countless times some unfortunate incident occurs that a file is accidentally deleted but the recovery software cannot find or recover it. Sometimes it finds it but it cannot be recovered as it is corrupted. Ashampoo Photo Recovery 2 promises that it can recover photos (even PDF and Word docs). The search I did was just a random search to see what Ashampoo Photo Recovery 2 will find and what I can recover. The size of the VirtualBox partition was 65gb.

I started at 12:00pm lunchtime and it went on till past 8pm. Got exhausted waiting on it, so I just cancelled it and checked the results. Ashampoo Photo Recovery  "rescued" 3160 photos of which I recovered it to the default folder. There was a lot of .jpg and .png files and there were some 5 PDF files. Three (3) of the PDF files were corrupted while the two (2) opened perfectly. I did not see any Word document though...I was scanning the images if there was something that I wanted to recover but there wasn't any that I re-use. There were also corrupted images present.

Now as compared with other alternatives that I have used the conditions seems to be the same. The bigger the size of the source the longer it will take to search and scan. File corruption is also present in all the alternatives that I have used.

I wish there was a way that we can search for, say, just JPG files (or specific image files) and a" start-end date" in Ashampoo Photo Recovery. That would cut the length of time for the search and recovery. The only "filters" given are:
  • Ignore file sizes smaller
  • Ignore photos where width and height is below
  • Maximum photo file size
  • Common photo and Internet files (JPG, PNG, TIF, GIF, PDF)
  • RAW files (Digital camera files)
  • Modern photo files (HEIF, JPEG2000, WEBP, JXR)
  • Rare graphics files (TGA, PCX, SGI, APCDOC, PSD, ...)

Anyway, performance seems to be at par with the other alternatives that I have used previously (EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard, MiniTool Data Recovery, AnyRecover to name a few). I did not have the time to truly compare this time so sorry. Ashampoo Photo Recovery 2 can suffice as an image recovery tool but you cannot rely on it solely. You always will need alternative/s standing by to help you when there is a specific file you are searching.
