N.Y. plastic grocery bag ban starts March 1, some fear confusion, loopholes

ALBANY – Like many environmentalists, Eric Goldstein is applauding New York’s pending ban on single-use plastic grocery bags, but he also thinks the ban should be delayed beyond its March 1 implementation date.
 
Why? He doesn’t think the state Department of Environmental Conservation has done enough to inform the public that the ban is actually imminent. He fears the confusion and possible backlash that could result.
 
“Nobody wants to see the state fumble on the initial kickoff,” Goldstein, senior attorney for the National Resources Defense Council, said Monday during a hearing before DEC on the new law.
