Google Will Let Rivals Use the Default Android Search Widget
#1
Quote:Google’s efforts to comply with EU’s antitrust regulation bring major changes to Android devices, and after the company started prompting users for alternate search engines and browsers, a new substantial update is planned.

Google today announced it would allow other search providers to be registered with the Android home screen widget, basically allowing users to replace Google with any other search engine they want.

A similar setting will be offered for Google Chrome, and Google explains that users can thus enable the new search options when setting up a new Android smartphone or tablet in Europe.

“Next year, we'll introduce a new way for Android users to select a search provider to power a search box on their home screen and as the default in Chrome (if installed). Search providers can apply to be part of the new choice screen, which will appear when someone is setting up a new Android smartphone or tablet in Europe,” Paul Gennai, Product Management Director, Google, says.
