2. SpIDer Gate / HTTP monitor


Safe Internet traffic scanning on all ports is carried out on traffic transmitted via Dr.Web-supported protocols, including secure connections (if the user has enabled the option to scan SSL traffic).

Safe Internet surfing with secure search, Google, Yandex, Yahoo!, Bing and Rambler will only return links to content considered safe by the search engines and Dr.Web. Dangerous sites will be excluded from search results altogether!

Secure communication traffic filtering for instant messengers such as Mail.Ru Agent, ICQ, and Jabber. Links leading to malware and phishing sites are removed from messages. The anti-virus scans transmitted attachments. The transfer of potentially dangerous files is blocked.

 

• The HTTP monitor SpIDer Gate scans incoming and outgoing HTTP traffic in real time, intercepts all HTTP connections, filters out data, blocks infected web pages in any browser, scans files in archives, and protects users from phishing sites and other dangerous web resources.
  
  
• Scans encrypted SSL traffic (HTTPS).
  
  
• Access is blocked to sites used to distribute malicious or potentially dangerous programs, phishing sites, and sites using social engineering techniques to misguide users.
  
  
• A separate database of sites that distribute unlicensed content offers protection for copyright holders.
  
  
• Disable the scan of outgoing or incoming traffic and create a blacklist of applications whose HTTP traffic will be scanned no matter what (blacklist). Define applications whose traffic will not be scanned (whitelist).
  
  
• Prioritise the traffic you want to scan (i.e., do a balance test). Balance CPU load and Internet bandwidth usage.
  
  
• SpIDer Gate operates independently from web browsers.
  
  
• Filtering does not affect overall system performance, surfing speed, and the amount of traffic transmitted.
  
  
• No configuration is required in the default mode; Dr.Web SpIDer Gate starts scanning right after installation.
  
  
• Thanks to the redesign of the Dr.Web Net filtering Service traffic interception routines, downloading files from the Internet has become much faster. The revamped routines for scanning media content ensure that online video and audio is streamed without delay. CPU usage for file transfers via browsers and download managers has decreased significantly. Fans of Dr.Web and online games will notice the difference in scanning speed!

3. SpIDer Mail monitor / Anti-spam


VIRUS-FREE EMAIL 
 

• Scans any traffic transmitted on all ports via Dr.Web-supported protocols, including secure connections (if the user has enabled the option to scan SSL traffic).
  
  
• SpIDer Mail monitor scans mail before emails are received by a mail client and prevents malware that is mainly distributed by spam from exploiting software vulnerabilities.
  
  
• Real-time anti-virus and anti-spam scanning of emails over the SMTP/POP3/NNTP/IMAP4 protocols.
  
  
• Scans encrypted SSL connections (SMTPS/POP3S/IMAP4S).
  
  
• Scanning does not interrupt the operation of mail clients and does not cause delivery delays.
  
  
• Individual processing rules are applied for each type of malicious object — viruses, riskware, adware, hack tools, paid dialers, and jokers.

4. Dr.Web Firewall


The Dr.Web Firewall uses its own database of trusted applications. These are programs that incorporate a digital certificate. Applications that Dr.Web believes to be legitimate can connect to any address via any port. Exception: if a program is not digitally signed, its signature is invalid, or there is no signature at all, (e.g., those created by enthusiasts or open source programs), the user is prompted to create a rule.
 

• The Application Layer Connection Control manages the ability of applications and processes to access network resources and registers access attempts in the applications log.
  
  Packet-layer filtering makes it possible to control the connection to the Internet regardless of what application is using it. The packet-filter log stores information about packets sent over network interfaces.
  
  In Game Mode, a rule dialogue window will appear above any application running in full-screen mode.
  
  Real-time monitoring of application networking activities and forced disconnection of applications from the network, if necessary.

5. Anti-virus network



The Anti-virus network manages security of all the computers in your household. 
 

• Remotely administer and configure the Dr.Web software installed on local network computers.
  
• Remote control does not require the Dr.Web Control Center.
  
• A remote connection can be established from any computer to any other computer.
  
• Administration capabilities include: retrieving statistics and logs from a remote machine, viewing and changing module settings, and starting and shutting down anti-virus components. • Limit Internet and computer time.
  
  
• Block any attempts to adjust the system time and time zone to prevent children from using the computer without their parents’ permission.
  
  
• The "Interval Time Limit" option lets parents specify the amount of time (in 30-minute intervals) that their children can spend on the computer.
  
  
• Automatically block night-time access to a PC.
  
  
• Create time-limit profiles.
  

BLOCKS ACCESS TO FILES AND FOLDERS 
 

• Blocks access to individual files and directories to keep your files and important information protected from deletion and unauthorised access.
  
  
• The access mode parameter (deny access or grant access in the read-only mode) offers more ways to configure access.
  

ADDITIONAL OPTIONS 
 

• Parental Control settings profiles can be established individually for each user.
  
  
• Settings can be imported between user accounts.

PREVENTIVE PROTECTION

1. Ransomware Protection

Dr.Web's 'Ransomware protection' disrupts trojan attempts to encrypt your files. Ransomware Protection allows detection of processes that attempt to encrypt user's files using known algorithm that defines processes as a security threat. Such malicious programs block access to user data and then demand ransom for decryption. They are considered among the most common malicious programs and cause great annual losses both to companies and ordinary users these days. 

Encryption ransomware is one of the most common types of malware. Cybercriminals use it to corrupt user files and demand a ransom to decrypt them. In other words, they count on users being in a helpless and panicked state so that they can engage in everyday blackmail.

Traditional signature-based protection cannot detect absolutely every single threat at the moment of attack. This is because the virus databases on a PC may not yet have been updated. The Ransomware Protection will detect the most newly released encryption ransomware. It identifies up to 98% of encryption ransomware programs thanks to special algorithms that control the behaviour of running programs. This enables Dr.Web to effectively resist unknown threats.

2. Exploit Protection



The Exploit Prevention component will keep data safe from malware that exploits vulnerabilities in popular applications to try to penetrate a system. The 'Exploit Prevention' component allows you to block malicious programs that use vulnerabilities of well-known applications. To determine whether an object is malicious, the component uses also the data from Dr.Web cloud service. When it detects that an attempt is being made to exploit a vulnerability, Dr.Web will forcibly terminate the process of the program being attacked.

An exploit is a malicious program, a sequence of commands, or special malicious code that exploits vulnerabilities to deliver Trojans into a system or hack software. There also exist exploit kits, which are designed to leverage a number of vulnerabilities.

An 'exploit' lets attackers infiltrate systems covertly. Even if your OS is configured to warn you at program start-up that a program may be malicious, the malicious code in that program can be executed without your knowledge through the exploitation of vulnerabilities. Dr.Web protects against exploits by intercepting programs that are being injected via a vulnerability.

3. Behavioral Analysis



The Behavior Analysis component allows the user to configure Dr.Web reaction on 3rd-party application actions that may result in infecting your computer, e.g., attempts to modify the HOSTS file or to change the critically important system registry keys. 

When component is enabled, Dr.Web blocks automatic changing of system objects, if such modification explicitly signifies a malicious attempt to harm the operating system. Behavior analysis protects the system against previously unknown malicious programs that can avoid detection by traditional signature-based and heuristic analyses. To determine whether an application is malicious, the component uses the real-time data from Dr.Web cloud service.


Dr.Web's Behavioural Analysis module' can:
 

• Protect systems against new, highly prolific malicious programs that are capable of avoiding detection by traditional signature-based analysis and heuristic routines because their entries haven't yet been added to the security system (for example, because the latest updates have not been downloaded)
  
  
• Detect unwanted file modification, monitor the operation of all system processes to detect actions that are typical of malware (e.g., encryption ransomware activities), and prevent malicious objects from injecting their code into other processes
  
  
• Detect and neutralise threats that have not yet been discovered: encryption ransomware, injectors, remote-controlled malware used for espionage and to create botnets, and malware packers

I have used Dr. Web Security Space and I found it to be reliable in protecting against malware. I like that they have fixed the overactive firewall some time back which was not configured by the user and it used to block almost all the app processes. I like that Dr. Web has many components to protect against a wide range of threats like Firewall, exploit protection, ransomware protection etc. I have seen quite a few detections related to  hosts file which may have some suspicious behavior. Lastly I like that it has nice GUI and easy to use UI and light on PC resources. I also would like to suggest adding anti theft features in its android app.

  I have previously used Dr.Web Security Space and this antivirus has successfully coped with its purpose.
Dr.Web Security Space includes almost the entire range of protective functions against all types of Internet threats, including zero-day vulnerabilities and includes antivirus, firewall, preventive protection, antispam, SpIDer web antivirus Gate, data and information protection, parental control.
  It would be nice to have another sandbox module.

I have used Dr.Web Security Space a couple of times and it performed well and got the job done. I guess I want to see Dr.Web participate in a 3dr party testing so proper gauging can be ascertained for their product. Can't see any review/test from 3rd party organizations and most users refer to them for better poroduct guidance. What's keeping them away from such organizations? Participation makes them even more competitive in my opinioin. Thanks for sponsoring us here Dr.Web!
