At Computex 2025, AMD introduced its new upscaling and frame generation technology, currently known under the codename FSR Redstone. In a follow-up interview, Chris Hall, Senior Director of Software Development at AMD, confirmed that Redstone has been designed to work without relying on dedicated AI accelerators inside the GPU.
Instead, Redstone uses AMD’s ML2CODE framework, which converts pre-trained AI models into optimized compute shader code. This approach removes the dependency on specialized hardware, making it possible to run Redstone on non-AMD GPUs, provided the vendor supports standard graphics APIs such as DirectX or Vulkan.
