Intel Lunar Lake and AMD Strix Point laptops won't support Microsoft Copilot+ feature

Perhaps the biggest feature is the lack of features.

Intel and AMD have confirmed that Copilot+ features won’t be available on their hardware upon the platform launch next week. Currently, only Qualcomm Snapdragon X laptops, scheduled to launch on June 18, will support these new features. Competitors who already presented their next-gen mobile platforms, which support similar or faster AI inference performance, will not support these features at launch but will receive an update later.

The Copilot+ features include technologies such as Auto Super Resolution, which boosts framerates in games by dynamically adjusting screen resolution and using advanced upscaling algorithms powered by the built-in NPU (Neural Processing Unit). This feature will only be available on Qualcomm X series at launch next week.

Microsoft Copilot+ features support:
  • Qualcomm Snapdragon X Series: at launch (June 18)
  • AMD Ryzen AI 300 “Strix Point”: available through update after launch (July)
  • Intel Core Ultra 200V “Lunar Lake”: available through update after launch (Q3’24)
Another feature is Recall, Microsoft’s tool that periodically takes screenshots and allows users to query generative AI memory to search through and retrieve information instantly. However, security researchers have shown that this feature poses significant security concerns due to how easily it can be accessed. Microsoft has now confirmed that this feature is pushed back and won’t be available at launch.

Other features that Intel and AMD platforms will miss at launch are Restyle Image and Cocreator. The former is an AI-powered feature that allows users to change the style of an image based on pretrained models (such as different art styles). The latter is a Paint feature that enables users to turn simple sketches into real artwork. Worth noting that the image generation software is easily available through 3rd party software or online tools at this point.

Microsoft:

Quote:“Intel Lunar Lake and AMD Strix PCs are Windows 11 AI PCs that meet our Copilot+ PC hardware requirements. We are partnering closely with Intel and AMD
to deliver Copilot+ PC experiences through free updates, when available,” — James Howell, Microsoft

Intel:

Quote:“Lunar Lake will get the Copilot+ experiences via an update when available,” — Thomas Hannaford, Intel

AMD:

Quote:“We expect to have Copilot+ experiences by the end of 2024″ — Matthew Hurwitz, AMD

Speaking of third-party software, while Microsoft official features may not be available, there is software that uses NPUs, such as Adobe, DaVinci Resolve, and CapCut. These should work regardless of Microsoft Copilot+ certification, as they hook into the NPU directly.
