HDMI 2.2 offers higher bandwidth than DisplayPort 2.1

Up to 96 Gbps, twice the bandwidth of 2.1 specs.



Today, we have updates for both DisplayPort (2.1b specifications) and HDMI. As rumored, the HDMI Forum is announcing new specifications for its 2021 connection standard, enabling significantly higher bandwidth compared to its predecessor.

According to the official press release, the HDMI 2.2 specifications support 96 Gbps, doubling the bandwidth of HDMI 2.1 (48 Gbps). The new standard also introduces a protocol called Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), designed to improve audio and video synchronization in systems with multiple connection points, such as AV receivers and soundbars.

Additionally, the HDMI Forum is introducing a new cable type called Ultra96, officially certified to support the higher bandwidth. These cables will require HDMI certification to display the label. If you’re planning ahead, ensure you choose Ultra96 cables over other “2.2” solutions already listed on various retail platforms. According to the presentation, these cables will run to at least 2 meters in length and will launch in Q3/Q4 this year.
 

Also included is Latency Indication Protocol (LIP) for improving audio and video synchronization, especially for multiple-hop system configurations such as those with an audio video receiver or soundbar.

The specification includes a new Ultra96 HDMI Cable supporting 96 Gbps bandwidth and enabling all the HDMI 2.2 Specification features. It is part of the HDMI Cable Certification Program requiring each model length to be tested and certified and display a Certification Label.

The HDMI 2.2 specifications will be available to all HDMI 2.x adopters, with the release scheduled for the first half of 2025. It is currently unclear whether GPUs supporting these specifications will be available at launch.
