Hardware Canucks has published a video that looks at running laptop DDR5 in desktop boards using SO-DIMM-to-DIMM adapter cards. The channel says the approach is meant for people who need to build or upgrade now, but do not want to pay current desktop DDR5 pricing.

The idea is simple. You buy a small adapter that lets a DDR5 SO-DIMM slot into a standard desktop DIMM slot. A round-up from 3DCenter says these adapters are already being discussed and lists typical pricing at about €8 to €18 on Amazon, with lower prices often seen in Asian marketplaces.

Hardware Canucks says it tested the setup across several current platforms, including AMD Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 9000 systems, plus Intel LGA1700 and LGA1851 builds. In their testing, DDR5-4800 was the most consistent target, with higher speeds depending on the CPU memory controller and the specific adapter revision.

They also note that some systems may boot at a lower default speed until memory settings are set manually, and that the adapters add height that can conflict with large air coolers or small ITX cases.
