Microsoft is announcing an update to its DirectSR, a standardized technology for super resolution. In May, when DirectSR launched, it came with AMD’s FSR 2.2 as a built-in solution and driver-level support for Intel’s XeSS and NVIDIA’s DLSS.

Today, Microsoft is updating FSR 2.2 to FSR 3.1. It’s important to note that this is not the full technology stack, which includes both upscaling and frame generation. The latter is not included in this update, so DirectSR, as the name suggests, only covers the super resolution (upscaling) aspect.

Quote:Following our initial announcement of the DirectSR preview, we are pleased to share an update. DirectSR, our standardized super resolution (SR) API for D3D12 titles, now supports FSR 3.1 (upscaler-only), bringing enhanced upscaling capabilities to further improve your gaming experience. Although it’s been five months since DirectSR launched, there has been little discussion about support for this technology. It appears that every GPU vendor is focusing on their own solutions and working directly with developers, rather than shipping games that support all technologies through this standardized solution.

Perhaps DirectSR launched too late, as frame generation has become a significant performance boost, and Microsoft’s tech does not focus on that. Or perhaps DirectSR support and popularity are yet to kick off, hard to say.

Microsoft ‘directs’ users (or more specifically – developers) to update their drivers to take advantage of the update. It is included with the Agility SDK 1.715-1 preview, so it may be a while before it reaches gamers.
