Overview
Condusiv Technologies' SSDkeeper™ Professional guarantees to boost Windows laptops and workstations with faster than new performance. SSDkeeper’s patented write optimization engine prevents excessively small, fragmented writes that rob the performance and endurance of SSDs. SSDkeeper ensures large, clean contiguous writes from Windows, so maximum payload is carried with every input/output (I/O) operation. SSDkeeper also extends the life and longevity of solid-state drives (SSDs) by reducing the amount of Program/Erase (P/E) cycles required when writing files. SSDkeeper runs quietly in the background, without hampering system resources, and performs all optimizations automatically in real-time.

Patented Write Optimization
SSDkeeper’s patented write optimization engine prevents excessively small, fragmented writes that rob the performance and endurance of SSDs. SSDkeeper ensures large, clean contiguous writes from Windows, so maximum payload is carried with every input/output (I/O) operation. By eliminating the “death by a thousand cuts” scenario of many, tiny writes and reads that slow system performance, the lifespan of a SSD is also extended due to significant reduction in write amplification issues that plague all SSD devices. Since SSD devices can only handle a finite number of writes before failing, SSDkeeper limits write amplification issues associated with small, fractured writes that inflate the amount of P/E cycles performed to process files.
Patented Read Optimization
SSDkeeper electrifies Windows system performance further with an additional patented feature—dynamic memory caching. By automatically using idle, available DRAM to serve hot reads, data is served from memory, which is 12–15X faster than SSD and further reduces wear to the SSD device. The real genius in SSDkeeper’s DRAM caching engine is that nothing has to be allocated for cache. All caching occurs automatically. If a system's memory is constrained at any point, SSDkeeper’s caching engine will back off entirely. However, systems with just 4GB of available DRAM commonly serve 50% of read traffic. It doesn’t take much available memory to have a big impact on performance.

Enhanced Reporting
If the user never knew how much Windows inefficiencies were robbing his system performance, SSDkeeper tracks time saved due to elimination of small, fragmented writes and time saved from every read request that is served from DRAM instead of being served from the underlying SSD. SSDkeeper enables users to see what percentage of all write requests are reduced by sequentializing otherwise small, fractured writes and what percentage of all read requests are cached from idle, available DRAM. SSDkeeper provides the same core patented functionality as Diskeeper 18 (minus defragmentation features that are only applicable to hard disk drives). That being said, the benefit of these features to a SSD device is more than just improved write and read performance —it is improved longevity.
Since SSDkeeper is transparent, “set-and-forget” software, and operates with near zero overhead as a lightweight file system driver, organizations achieve significant performance gains without management or system resource overhead.
Features at a glance:
- Delivers accelerated I/O performance for Windows PCs
- Proactively prevents small, fragmented writes at the Windows OS level
- Extends SSD lifespan by reducing write amplification issues
- Caches hot reads from idle, available DRAM
- True "set and forget" functionality
- Low overhead - continuous optimization without hampering resources
- Dashboard reporting shows the actual "time saved" benefit on every system so the value is easily quantifiable and never in question
How it works
SSDkeeper™ was designed to handle fragmentation more intelligently and efficiently. As all file fragments are unequal, SSDkeeper targets only the files that will get the most performance gain from defragmentation. Systems today use "thin provisioning and/or snapshots" on their storage. By only handling file fragments that cause performance issues, SSDkeeper minimizes the negative effect of unnecessary I/O’s and more importantly, an increase in drive usage.
When you choose the Automatic Fragmentation Elimination Option (recommended) that is dependent upon the type of storage device used (located in the advanced tab of the configuration settings screen), SSDkeeper can detect whether the device is directly attached or remotely attached. SSDkeeper performs a more extensive elimination of fragmentation on storage type that is directly attached. When the storage type is remotely attached, only critical fragmentation will be eliminated.
![[Image: 7a6z5Cv.png]](https://i.imgur.com/7a6z5Cv.png)
SSDkeeper integrates several technologies to optimize the user's system. They are listed below:
IntelliMemory Caching Technology
IntelliMemory caching technology provides intelligent read caching which greatly improves file read times while lowering the number of drive I/Os. This technology improves I/O performance and allows the system to do more work faster.
IntelliWrite - Preventative Optimization
IntelliWrite is the ground breaking technology that prevents the majority of file performance issues from ever occurring, dramatically improving Windows system performance. Preventative optimization with IntelliWrite has been found to be more efficient than other optimization methods. A small percentage of fragmentation is not preventable and will be eliminated by Automatic Defragmentation. The combination of IntelliWrite and Automatic Defragmentation will keep the user's system running at optimum performance in the most effective and efficient way possible.
InvisiTasking®
SSDkeeper uses InvisiTasking technology to perform its work without impacting other processes on the machine. InvisiTasking uses a proprietary technique developed in Condusiv Technologies' research lab to carefully monitor resource consumption on a Windows computer system and inject SSDkeeper processing into the unused portions—and only into the unused portions. InvisiTasking is great that it is all but impossible to even detect whether SSDkeeper is running. That means SSDkeeper can run all the time. It never needs to back off or shut down to reduce overhead, since overhead is already virtually non-existent. SSDkeeper with InvisiTasking means a machine runs at peak performance all the time, without any user interaction.
CogniSAN™
This technology detects external resource usage within a shared storage system, such as a SAN, and allows for transparent optimization by never competing for resources utilized by other systems over the same storage infrastructure.
Automatic Fragmentation Elimination
SSDkeeper was designed to handle fragmentation more intelligently and efficiently than ever before. Not all fragments are created equal. Because it is inefficient and may cause additional overhead to defragment files that are never used, SSDkeeper is designed to target the files that will get the most performance gain from defragmentation. This change in methodology also helps minimize a problem that can occur on remotely attached storage devices (such as SANs). Many systems today use thin provisioning and/or snapshots on their storage. By only handling file fragments that cause performance issues, SSDkeeper minimizes the negative effect of unnecessary I/O’s and more importantly, an increase in drive usage. The following technologies comprise automatic fragmentation elimination and can be configured to best suit the user's environment and performance needs.
Technologies at Work in Automatic Fragmentation Elimination
- IntelliWrite Fragmentation Prevention
IntelliWrite is the ground breaking technology that prevents the majority of fragmentation from ever occurring, dramatically improving Windows system performance. Prevention of fragmentation with IntelliWrite has been found to be more efficient than other defragmentation methods. A small percentage of fragmentation is not preventable and will be eliminated by Automatic Defragmentation. The combination of IntelliWrite and Automatic Defragmentation will keep the user's system running at optimum performance in the most effective and efficient way possible.
- Automatic Defragmentation
Automatic Defragmentation works automatically in the background, with no negative performance impact on other applications that are running, improving the performance of the user's computer without slowing down other operations while doing so.
- Instant Defrag
Instant Defrag is an enhancement to Automatic Defragmentation that quickly eliminates any fragmentation that is not proactively prevented with IntelliWrite. Rather than waiting for potentially extended periods of time for fragmentation to build up, this feature provides uninterrupted peak system performance. Progressively more beneficial the larger the volume, Instant Defrag also saves system resources by minimizing the need for volume-wide analysis and defragmentation tasks.
Space Reclamation
The Space Reclamation feature identifies areas on a file system that are no longer in use and provides this information to the storage sub-system so that its thin provisioning, data deduplication and other advanced dynamic storage features can take advantage of this information. If the Space Reclamation option to "Notify Storage Manager of Unused drive" areas is selected, SSDkeeper will issue "SCSI UNMAP" or "ATA TRIM" commands to let the storage system make this space available and potentially reclaim it for use. The storage sub-system must support SCSI UNMAP or ATA TRIM to gain this benefit. If the Space Reclamation option to "Mark clusters for reclamation by zeroing out blocks" is selected, SSDkeeper writes zeroes to the unused area. For storage sub-systems that support this, it allows a separate function of SSDkeeper to be used to make this space potentially available.
Terabyte Volume Engine™
The Terabyte Volume Engine is specially developed for the most massive data volumes ever created. Starting at volumes containing 4 to 5 TB of data, the Terabyte Volume Engine will complete the job even faster and more thorough than previous engines. The new engine is the only defragmentation solution capable of handling 10 TB, 20 TB and even greater amounts of data.

SSDkeeper Professional Features
IntelliWrite® write I/O optimization technology
Prevents files from being fractured and broken apart into pieces, with each piece requiring its own I/O operation before being written to SSD in a non-sequential manner. This reduces write amplification issues that shorten SSD lifespan, and boosts system performance, with fewer I/O operations required to process any given file.
IntelliMemory® read I/O optimization technology
Intelligently caches active data from read requests using idle, available memory. Nothing has to be allocated for cache since IntelliMemory is aware moment by moment of how much memory is otherwise idle and available to be used for cache. This further reduces I/O overhead to the underlying SSD device, enabling systems to serve read requests from DRAM which is 12-15X faster than a SSD.
InvisiTasking® intelligent monitoring technology
Allows all SSDkeeper operations to run silently in the background with near-zero impact on compute resources. In the rare instance a system maxes out compute resources, SSDkeeper operations will back off entirely. InvisiTasking ensures SSDkeeper runs quietly without any visible intrusion on activities.
Benefit Reporting
SSDKeeper's dashboard displays the actual “time saved” benefit on every system so the value is easily quantifiable and never in question. See exactly how many write I/Os and how many read I/Os are eliminated from going down to the SSD device, what percentage of read and write traffic is offloaded from the underlying SSD, and, more importantly, how much I/O time that saves any one system or group of systems over any time period.
I/O Performance Monitoring
Reveals key performance metrics like IOPS, throughput and latency. It reveals the amount of workload processed on the local system for any given time period. It also provides important memory usage information like total physical memory and min/max/average of available memory and how much of that was used for cache. If there is not sufficient available DRAM, users are not getting the best performance possible from SSDkeeper.
Analytics
Provides an hour-by-hour view for any time period to understand exactly what is happening on the local system related to key metrics like workload, read/write percentage, IOPS, throughput, I/O response time and benefits like write I/O reduction from IntelliWrite and read I/O reduction from IntelliMemory.
HyperFast® SSD Optimizer Technology
Produces faster performance in solid-state drives running on Microsoft operating systems. The HyperFast feature includes TRIM functionality and is enabled only if a solid-state drive is recognized.
Free Space Consolidation Engine
Swiftly consolidates free space to ensure any new writes are performed optimally and lowers the program/erase (P/E) cycles that result in write amplification issues that reduce SSD longevity.
