Not sure why German developers think giving away older versions of their product will be better, rather than a current version with "no free updates". This marketing strategy is bizarre.

I totally agree. They aren't losing anything by running a promotion of their new product (w/o updates) - they're actually gaining in publicity and ultimately sales.
