Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 : A Short-Spin

Software, applications, etc.! Our computing life is full of it! With continuous development of applications comes newer versions of existing ones. New alternatives also. There always will be something better from what you are using. It is imminent that there will come a time what you are using now will be replaced. Yeah, sooner or later you'd have to say "goodbye" to your "once-loved" software application. "Uninstall" the old and "install" the new one! Windows has its own tools to make that possible for the user. But time and again Windows (Microsoft) has proven that they do not want a user to uninstall apps efficiently because of one word "telemetry" (or shall I say "spying"). Anyway almost all software applications do this. So you (the user) are not safe and privacy goes down the drain. There are 3rd party applications that are ready to help the user. Lots of them are around and even freeware apps will not disappoint! Now for the intermediate and (say) "finicky" making the best selection is always #1. For software "uninstallers" a lot has also evolved. Gone are the days that an "uninstaller" is just an uninstaller (plus registry cleaner). No Sir! Almost all the best "uninstallers" now carry the capability to install / monitor new applications and help the user gauge that "installed" applications performance. Now that is what will separate most paid "uninstallers" and freeware. The tools and features that come bundled with an "uninstaller" will always be scrutinized. The software developers compete toe-to-toe on this as they "always" claim theirs is the best / better.  Enter Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10!

Ashampoo® UnInstaller is Ashampoo's answer to the users uninstall problems! The new version Ashampoo® UnInstaller version 10 deletes programs without leftovers and allowing the user to install, test and remove software without worries.

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 combines four different techniques to eliminate installations down to the last byte. Log files created during installations are the most extensive approach, since every file and Registry modification is recorded. Uninstall scripts provided by each program are also factored in. If a dedicated profile is available in the built-in database, it will also be processed. This includes unwanted programs, applications that are "padded" into applications and are silently installer into the user's system. Nested installers or internet-based sideloading are often the culprit here. Finally, a revolutionary "deep system scan" is run following the uninstall procedure to detect and eliminate any leftover files and Registry entries! No need to reboot!

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 gets rid of no longer or never wanted browser extensions is equally easy, even for those little "helpers" that browsers themselves can't or won't list. The installation monitoring technology built into UnInstaller logs all file and system modifications and completely reverses them during software removal. Installations that weren't logged by UnInstaller are still fully removable thanks to the built-in database with hundreds of software profiles and Ashampoo's very own "Deep Cleaning" technology. The program also features snapshot technology to compare different system states and instantly spot modifications. Batch or drag & drop removal of software is also possible. Additional cleaning and maintenance modules further help with keeping PCs in perfect shape.

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 now comes with "Impact", a new module that visualizes the impact installed software has on system performance. "Impact" lists the programs that have the biggest impact on the performance of your PC. Several factors, (like CPU and memory load), are factored in to determine the order. This aids the user in determining how to optimize his system or just simply tells him what are the apps that poses a hindrance to an optimized performance. For system-locked files, Ashampoo® UnInstaller has "Unlocker" so the user can easily delete any locked file at his disposal. The program driver itself has been overhauled for greater stability and in-depth cleaning and uninstalling algorithms have been optimized for thoroughness.

Features at glance:

  • Visualize impact of applications on system
  • Full support for new Chromium based Edge browser
  • Unlock and delete locked files with Unlocker
  • Fully updated cleaners
  • Enhanced stability optimized program driver
  • Deep Clean technology v2 with even better results
  • Database with uninstall profiles for hard to remove programs
  • New extra thorough uninstall algorithm

A. Overview
The overview (first page) shows the general overview of your system as assessed by Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10. All the more important here is the "Quick features", where you will see the current status of installed programs, plugins etc., and the "History" where the "most recently installed programs" are listed including uninstall buttons for the user to access it immediately. Installation of new apps are or can be monitored by Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 if user ticks the toggle to "ON".

Uninstaller
UnInstaller is the basis of this application and Ashampoo® UnInstaller can perform additional in-depth cleaning to remove leftovers created by an application during use. This feature is enabled by default. UnInstaller detects when the uninstallation process is complete. In cases of uninstallation non-detection, user may manually notify the program using the corresponding button.

To check the list of uninstalled application, user can go to (left navigation bar) "Applications > Uninstalled". The uninstalled applications lists all recently uninstalled applications and allows the user to either delete the uninstall log or perform additional in-depth cleaning (in case the user has disabled this feature during the uninstallation).

Users can also "drag & drop" desktop application icons to let Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 "uninstall" selected application.

C. Install
Application installation is "usually" monitored by Ashampoo® UnInstaller but in case auto-detection fails, the install "trigger “springs into action when an ".exe" (installation file) is dragged into the install area. Or, (if user wants) he may click "Browse" to select the install file manually.

If monitoring is enabled, user can also right-click the corresponding icon in the Windows notification area to access the context menu and use "" to manually trigger new installations. Alternatively, he, the user can also left-click the icon.  During installations, a "notification" at the top of your screen can be seen signifying that the installation is being monitored. User can manually stop the logging process by clicking "Installation completed".

H. Tools
These are collection of tools that help the user clean system, remove no longer needed and leftover files and defragment the hard drive(s). Note that some modules that delete files and folders will always move them to the recycle bin first with the exception of "File Wiper". This allows the user to restore files/folders in the event of malfunctions. Note that this is only applicable if the user has NOT set the recycle bin to always delete files. Registry Optimizer always creates backup. If the user experiences any issues once cleaning is finished, he can always "revert" any changes through "Backups". Categories are below.

  • Drive Cleaner
  • Registry Optimizer
  • Internet Cleaner
  • StartUp Tuner
  • Service Manager
  • Undeleter
  • File Associator
  • File Wiper
  • Registry Defrag
  • Backups
  • Unlocker

Drive Cleaner
Drive Cleaner scans the user's system for no longer needed files and displays results grouped by categories. Ashampoo® UnInstaller displays the number of results for each category. User needs to "check" the check boxes to select/deselect individual results or use the top buttons to select all/no results from a category. A "Create report" can be availed to save your results as a text file. User can also make "exceptions" and specify file formats to be scanned. This can be seen in (Settings > Drive Cleaner > Exceptions and Settings > Drive Cleaner > Search drives)

Registry Optimizer
Registry Optimizer scans the user's Windows Registry database for no longer needed entries and displays results grouped by categories. User needs to "check" the check boxes to select/deselect individual results or use the top buttons to select all/no results from a category. A "Write a report" is there to save results as a text file. Exceptions are also allowed and user can specify an entry as an exception to exclude it from future searches. He can remove exceptions in the settings for this module. (Settings > Registry Optimizer > Exceptions)

Internet Cleaner
User can specify a scanned entry as an exception to exclude it from future searches. User can also remove exceptions in the settings for this module. This allows the user to keep settings such as login data for your webmail account from being deleted every time he uses Internet Cleaner thus eliminating the need to set it again. User can modify the list of secure cookies in the settings for this module. All browser elements to be "found" (Find Elements) can be set in (Settings > Internet Cleaner) as well as the user can also set cookies that are exempted from cleaner (Settings > Internet Cleaner > Secure Cookies)

StartUp Tuner
This module lists all applications that launch when Windows starts. Check boxes are there so the user can enable/disable individual entries.

Service Manager
Services are background programs required by Windows and other applications to work properly. This module lists all installed services and provides a rating on their usefulness. It also allows the user to modify start types individually.

Undeleter
Ashampoo® UnInstaller's "Undeleter" attempts to recover accidentally deleted files. User simply needs to select a drive and click "Search". Selected files after the scan can be recovered. The search text can be used to filter or narrow down the list of results. User needs to click "Restore" to recover the selected files.

File Associator
File Associator allows the user to associate a file / file types with viewer/editor programs. File types that are currently unassociated are marked red. User needs to click an entry to select it or hold down Shift to select multiple entries starting with the first selected entry or Ctrl to select multiple entries individually.

File Wiper
When Windows deletes a file, the deleted file's disk space is marked as reusable. As long as it isn't used for new data, the original data is still there and can be recovered easily. FileWiper overwrites these areas with data such as zeros so the data can no longer be recovered.

Registry Defrag
This module allows the user to defragment Windows Registry and optimize access times. The displayed current registry elements will be displayed and user needs to click "Analyze" to scan for optimizable parts. He then needs to click "Defragment" to start the optimization process.
A "reboot" pop-up may appear. user needs to click "reboot machine now" to facilitate the defragmentation.

Backups
Ashampoo® UnInstaller allows the user to "undo" changes made by the Registry Optimizer or WinOptimizer, (through Registry Optimizer) if the changes have led to undesired system behavior.

Unlocker
This "new" module allows the user to "unlock” files that are currently locked/used by Windows, thus giving the user the power to delete them. Note that deleting system-critical files may lead to crashes and instabilities.

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10–Uninstall programs, apps and browser extensions without leftovers

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 - Eliminate unwanted programs thoroughly and without compromise

OBSERVATIONS:

Installation of Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 is quick and simple. Same as other Ashampoo apps the usual 30-day trial period is now 10 days (requiring the trial user to register to avail of the full trial). As of trial usage there is this nag pop-up requiring you to enter the "license key" which can be entered offline and will be automatically activated when an internet connection is detected. A "skin" selection is presented to the user, (i) Energy, (ii) Emerald, (iii) Purple. User can change his mind later and set his desired skin in the "settings".

Uninstalling applications

As Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 is branded as a "program remover" (but there's a whole lot more tools bundled with it) I tried to install / uninstall GOM Player with it. To try the "Install" (see "C. Install") I dragged the installation file to the box provided. Through this the installation of GOM Player 2.3.50 (freeware) was logged by UnInstaller 10. Now to check the uninstall feature I removed GOM Player with UnInstaller 10. I enabled "perform additional in-depth cleaning" which will be performed after the "original uninstallation -- of the program". The uninstall log shows, 1054 registry objects deleted, 1382 file deleted, 98 mb of disk space reclaimed and 59 other actions performed. To check registry remnants, I fired-up CCleaner Free v5.42 > Registry Cleaner. CCleaner found 2 items (1 - Unused File Extensions, and 1 - Unused registry key) related to the GOM Player uninstall via Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10. See images below.

To compare with alternatives, I used IObit Uninstaller 10 Pro (v10.2.0.13). I installed GOM Player again with IObit logging the installation. Then used IObit Uninstaller 1o Pro to uninstall GOM Player. I have not enabled auto-delete of remnants so I can get a screenshot of it after IObit uninstalls GOM Player.

296 Registry items were found as remnants by IObit Uninstaller. Files deleted were 97.4mb.  To compare with Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 and to check registry remnants I fired-up CCleaner Free v5.42 > Registry Cleaner also. CCleaner found 65 unused file extensions, 1 Missing TypeLib Reference and 1 Uninstaller Reference Issue (from IObit Uninstaller). All are related to the GOM Player uninstall via IObit Uninstaller 10.2. See images below.

To compare further I installed GOM Player again and then uninstalled it via the freeware Wise Program Uninstaller 2.3.9. To compare and to check registry remnants I fired-up CCleaner Free v5.42 > Registry Cleaner also. CCleaner found 62 items (56 unused file extensions, 5 ActiveX/COM issue, and 1 Application Paths Issue). All are related to the GOM Player uninstall via Wise Program Uninstaller 2.3.9. See images below.

To compare further I installed GOM Player again and then uninstalled it via Revo Uninstaller Pro 3.2.1 trial version (outdated version as Revo Uninstaller Pro ver4.4 is the latest). Revo Uninstaller Pro scanned leftover items (935 keys / values 1139, 62 folders / 1379 files with 97.4mb total file size). To compare and to check registry remnants I fired-up CCleaner Free v5.42 > Registry Cleaner again. CCleaner found "only" 2 items (1 - Invalid or empty file class and 1 - Missing TypeLib Reference). See images below.

To compare with further I installed GOM Player in a separate location with Ashampoo® UnInstaller 9 and then uninstalled it via UnInstaller 9. I also enabled "perform additional in-depth cleaning" which will be performed after the "original uninstallation -- of the program". The uninstall log shows, 11 registry objects deleted, 1376 file deleted, and 97 mb of disk space reclaimed.

To check registry remnants, I fired-up CCleaner Free v5.42 > Registry Cleaner. CCleaner found 57 - Unused File Extension, 1 - Open with Application Issue, 5 ActiveX/COM issue, 1 - Application Paths Issue related to the GOM Player uninstall via Ashampoo® UnInstaller 9. See images below.

The summation of the "raw" data above shows that the least items or remnants / leftover that CCleaner has detected after each uninstaller used is that of Revo Uninstaller Pro v3.2.1 (trial) with only 2 items (1 - Invalid or empty file class and 1 - Missing TypeLib Reference) and Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 had 2 items (1 - Unused File Extensions, and 1 - Unused registry key)

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 9 had 64 items (57 - Unused File Extension, 1 - Open with Application Issue, 5 ActiveX/COM issue, 1 - Application Paths Issue). IObit Uninstaller 10.2 had 67 items (65 unused file extensions, 1 Missing TypeLib Reference and 1 Uninstaller Reference Issue). Wise Program Uninstaller 2.3.9 had 62 items (56 unused file extensions, 5 ActiveX/COM issue, and 1 Application Paths Issue)

Installation Monitoring
Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 is not original in monitoring program installation. IObit Uninstaller Pro and Revo Uninstaller Pro has their own way of logging / monitoring program installation. Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 (and UnInstaller 9) if set to monitor new installations, the app will automatically trigger the "install-notification" as indication to the user that such "installation" is being monitored. The same with IObit Uninstaller Pro 10.2 if “Install Monitor > Auto Monitor" is enabled, all installs will trigger automatic logging. It is only Revo UnInstaller Pro v3.2.1 that has to be triggered "manually" by the user to monitor installations.

Issue encountered:
I must have encountered some fluke as I was installing GOM Player for the 3rd time (installation monitored) for the uninstallation comparison using IObit Uninstaller Pro 10.2. Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 crashed twice on me. After that there wasn't any crashes but there were signals that it will owing to the "Not Responding" warning...See images below.

Help Desk
The "Help Desk" contents on Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 is so-so. There are only 2 (updated) help topics for UnInstaller 10. The Uninstaller 10 user manual can augment on this but there isn't much that you can get from it also. Perhaps they can delve more on KB articles because not every user is an advanced/intermediate one. the new-first-time users will surely benefit from this. User manuals / user guide is a must for any new user. Also an intermediate user can always check out some of his question via the manual / user guide eliminating the need for him to send support an email. The only in-depth user guide / manual I saw of the given alternatives is of Revo Uninstaller Pro 4.

In contrast IObit Uninstaller's online manual (no downloadable PDF manual is available) is much more informative than Ashampoo's. See below

Comparison to Ashampoo® UnInstaller 9 and Ashampoo® WinOptimizer 18
When using Uninstaller 9 and UnInstaller 10 you almost feel that you are using the same application and you cannot differentiate the "feel" of using an upgraded product (UnInstaller 10) versus an old / outdated product (UnInstaller 9) because the features are the same in all aspects "except" the E. Impact and Tools > Unlocker. I don't know about the other "new features" and "improved features". I cannot really "feel" and see the difference here. Its the same for me.

Also, if you look closer the "Tools" of UnInstaller 10 is actually 11 tools. UnInstaller 9 has 10 tools. Now the "Unlocker" in UnInstaller 10 is "new" but Tools (navigation panel modules) does not show "Backups". It shows in the Tools tab though, see image below. It is actually "missing" in the "navigation panel modules". Perhaps because the developers cannot insert it in the navigation panel and they are conserving space or something...Seems they intentionally did that too.

When comparing UnInstaller 10 to WinOptimizer 18 there are similarities of features / tools. I do not see "Impact", "Unlocker" and "Snapshots" in WinOptimizer 18 but there are ten (10) similar / redundant tools. WinOptimizer has also an "Uninstall Manager" although the uninstaller manager in WinOptimizer 18 (and WinOptimizer 17) does not have the in-depth cleaning (or Deep Clean technology). To get the "in-depth cleaning" via WinOptimizer 18 (or v17) you will have to "Optimize" in the WinOptimizer "Overview" or "Clean" your system after using the "Uninstall Manager".

Similar (or) redundant tools present in UnInstaller 10 and WinOptimizer 18 are:

  • Drive Cleaner
  • Registry Optimizer
  • Internet Cleaner
  • StartUp Tuner
  • Service Manager
  • Undeleter
  • File Associator
  • File Wiper
  • Registry Defrag
  • Backup (Backup Management)

I have already mentioned this in the Ashampoo® WinOptimizer 18 Short-Spin (review) HERE

Ashampoo® "only" removes or limits the full capability of one from the other (to make it relevant or have a reason to have a different product still "exists"). Again one example is the Uninstall Manager of WinOptimizer 18 lacking the "deep clean technology".  The rest of the tools are the same.

PRICING:

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 has a "one-time payment / no limit" price of $19.99. That "no-time limit" alone is the best deal you will get there! Imagine the competition pricing where,

IObit Uninstaller 10 Pro is priced at $12.97 for 3-PCs (1-year subscription).

Total Uninstall 7.0 priced at $39.95 for the professional edition (1-PC).

Revo Uninstaller Pro ver 4 at $11.99 for 1-year (active subscription**)

Advanced Uninstaller PRO v13.22.0.42 at $10.15 (1-year / 1-PC)

[Image: 14-Wise-Program-Uninstaller-interface.gif]

Wise Program Uninstaller 2.3.9 is freeware.

FINAL WORD:

Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 is not a simple program remover, but a suite of tools that can make sure your computer is tip-top and performing efficiently anytime, any day (if you "often" clean house that is). I mention this because no amount of "great tools" will help the user "if" he does not use it. The core functionality (and from the software title itself) the uninstall feature is superb and will remain among the top performers if uninstall/install-monitoring is gauged. The backup feature is all the more important there and it is very good that Ashampoo® has considered it rather than let the user rely on Snapshots (which is a different!)

Ashampoo's commitment to developing existing products is great and is always appreciated by users/fans worldwide. The comparison shown above with the alternatives (Revo Uninstaller Pro, IObit Uninstaller Pro and Wise Program Uninstaller) is just a raw comparison of have and have not features including remnant listings. All removal applications boast of total cleaning or remnant removal but as shown above there is no application that can boast of it. There are "only" 2 applications with the least leftover / remnants after uninstallation of GOM Player (Ashampoo® UnInstaller 10 and Revo Uninstaller Pro v3.2.1). BUT there are still leftovers. All programs have different scanning algorithms so this depends on the application itself. I am sure even CCleaner will have leftovers. I just used CCleaner to have a consistent final app checking. Again this is a "raw" comparison and results may vary depending on the user/s and set conditions.

On similar / redundant tools between UnInstaller 10 and WinOptimizer 18 a user like me will lean more on simplicity rather than have both applications and letting them eat valued space and ram. Windows has its own tools for the user and having redundancies that you will not use often is a "no-no" to me. But I differ from other users so questions will still remain, "If I have WinOptimizer 18 (or WinOptimizer 17) will I need UnInstaller 10?" or, "I already have UnInstaller 10, will I need WinOptimzer 18 (or 17)..? These redundancies (if you have both applications) will make the other redundant features / modules stagnant and eat space / ram.

If you are a beginner learning the ropes and need just one application to do it all (or lazy doing house cleaning) go for WinOptimizer 18 and you will NOT be sorry. For the intermediate then its 50% both ways. Install both WinOptimizer 18 and UnInstaller 10 and use any of the tools at your disposal. For the paranoid / app hungry with lots of ram at his disposal, then definitely, install all you want!

So the same as mentioned in the Ashampoo WinOptimizer Short-Spin, (review) if Ashampoo® can streamline their apps features so redundancies will be placed at a "very" minimum that would be swell. Perhaps just create "one" distinct app that will have all the power features, (like -- WinOptimizer Ultimate? ..Wny not?). Imagine that! If Ashampoo can merge all the power apps like Uninstaller 10 with WinOptimizer 18 then "WOW" that would be something else! I am sure they have thought about it..BUT it seems that Ashampoo wants to have both products existing so the user will have to decide on his own. Dang with redundancy? Hmmm...Perhaps, perhaps not!

Cheers guys!
