Have you ever wondered how 3D models are designed and created? This beginner level CAD course focuses on easing the transition from 2D to 3D design skills using Autodesk® Fusion 360™. The course includes introductions to industry standard 3D modeling techniques, and covers four main types of 3D modeling in Fusion 360: Sketching and parametric modeling, freeform modeling and sculpting, direct modeling, and assembly modeling. To guide you through this transition, we’ll provide you with a 3D model of a reciprocating saw, which offers elements of 2D and 3D designs and modeling.

Whether you are a designer, engineer, machinist, maker, artist, teacher, student, or just plain curious, this course will help you to take your first steps and make the transition to professional 3D modeling. Through a series of easy to follow video tutorials and 3D modeling exercises, the course will equip you with the necessary professional competencies required for 3D modeling and design.

After completing this course, students will:

Contents and Overview
This course consists of 11 sections that include lectures and hands-on exercises introducing 3D modeling using Fusion 360. Each lesson includes comprehensive lecture presentations and project exercises that include step-by-step video instruction, project resources and datasets, and a final course assessment.

At the beginning of the course, we’ll introduce the main differences between 2D and 3D models using Fusion 360. You’ll create a new project and use the Fusion user interface to survey a 3D model of a reciprocating saw. You’ll then sketch 2D shapes and use them to create a simple 3D CAD model in Fusion 360

Once you’ve been introduced to 3D modeling, we’ll guide you through the four main types of 3D modeling in Fusion 360: Sketching and parametric modeling, freeform modeling and sculpting, direct modeling, and assembly modeling.

After a brief overview, you’ll learn how to use parametric sketching in Fusion 360™ by drafting a trigger for the reciprocating saw. You’ll then advance from parametric sketching to parametric modeling by creating a solid 3D model of the saw trigger. As you advance through the second half of the course, you’ll learn how to freeform model using an imported photograph, and then directly edit existing models of the reciprocating saw casing to rapidly modify the design of your 3D CAD model. Finally, you’ll learn how to use Fusion 360’s assembly modeling tools to create and drive Joints for parts in the saw assembly.

At the end of the course, you’ll take a course assessment that demonstrates your expertise and shows you where you might need more practice. The skills in this course will help you take your first steps towards professional 3D modeling.
