Google Meet updates safety features, allows adding more co-hosts and more

Google Meet is rolling out a few new features intended to improve the safety and security of the platform. Among these features is the ability to add up to 25 co-hosts to a meeting to expand control and keep meetings free from interruptions.

The feature to add co-hosts was previously only available to Google Education customers, but it is now being rolled out to more Google Workspaces.

This new co-hosting feature makes it easier to manage meetings. To streamline the process even further, Google has also released new meeting features such as enabling and disabling screen sharing, muting all participants, limiting who is allowed to chat, and even ending the meeting for everyone.

Adding more co-hosts means that meetings will run more smoothly as specific tasks can be split amongst the co-hosts. One person doesn’t have to mute participants, launch polls, and manage Q&As, but instead can focus on leading the meeting and discussions and leave these tasks to the assigned co-hosts. To start assigning co-hosts, you will need to turn on ‘Host Management’ under the ‘Host Controls’ option in Google Meet settings.

Another new feature that is being released is Quick Access, which will allow hosts to control who can automatically join a meeting and who needs to ask permission first. This is a valuable safety feature as it gives the hosts more control over who attends specific meetings. If hosts prefer not to use Quick
Access, that means that attendees will only be able to join once the host has first joined.

Another new control is the ‘People’ panel, which lets you search for specific participants. You can then apply any needed moderations or assign co-host abilities directly from this panel to individual participants.

These new features help to give more control to hosts in meetings, making it easier than ever to ensure that the privacy and security of these virtual meetings are maintained. These new controls are said to roll out to desktop and mobile devices on 16 August.

Closing words

Google Meet is becoming more secure and more functional with the latest updates made. These updates allow more co-hosts and features to make controlling the meetings even more manageable. I look forward to seeing what additional features will be released to make virtual meetings through this platform even better.
