AMD Ryzen 8000 “Zen5” APUs leak: Strix Halo with RDNA3.5 iGPU to compete with up to R

Moore’s Law is Dead has shared some new information on the upcoming AMD Zen5 architecture, possibly the first and biggest leak on the architecture thus far.

In this case, we are getting some actual leak, so the bullet points are attached to some leaked slides confirming the basic information such as architecture, core count or even the type of RDNA graphics architecture. And starting with the GPU architecture, we learn that AMD will launch something called RDNA3.5, a refined or simply updated RDNA for next-gen APUs.

AMD Strix series to compete with NVIDIA RTX 40 GPUsAs we already knew, AMD is set to launch Strix Point APU with Zen5, but today we learn it is supposed to have up to 12 cores. Interestingly, AMD is also working on a higher-end APU called Strix Halo, but other leakers claim it may actually be called Sarlak. This Halo product would feature a chiplet design and up to 16 cores. Furthermore, the underlying RDNA3.5 GPU architecture would be up to 16 CUs (so 4 more than current APUs) for Strix Point. However, the “Halo” APU is said to have up to 40 CUs, so a massive performance uplift for an APU.

The Halo/Starlak is said to be an ultimate mobile platform that will launch in the second half of 2024.

It is designed as a competitor to the Apple-M-series, so we are likely to see this APU in powerful mobile laptops that will not require any discrete GPUs.

The Strix APU series would compete with up to RTX 4070 Max-Q GPU in their 40CU configuration. The RDNA3.5 GPU architecture would also be available with 32, 24 and 20 CU configurations, competing with 4060, 4050 and 3050 series of graphics from NVIDIA. The latter part was confirmed by another leaked slide from MLID:

Flagship mobile “Fire Range”More importantly, we now have a leak on the Dragon Range successor, the flagship mobile chip. It is said to be called “Fire Range” and would feature up to 16 cores, so just as many as Dragon. Interestingly, the GPU architecture was previously listed as RDNA3+/3.5 but was later changed to RDNA2. Let’s remind our readers that the “Range” series are technically a desktop CPU design with chiplets on a BGA interposer. AMD can easily upgrade the chiplet to Zen5 but keep the same IOD chiplet which also has the built-in graphics.

There is also a smaller APU called Hawk Point, which is to feature up to 8 cores. This is supposedly a rebadged Phoenix Point with a refined 4nm process. It would be the first APU to launch next year around CES, but also the only leaked APUs to use Zen4 instead of 5.
