Quote:Intel and AMD together form x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group
Now that’s something unexpected.
Intel and AMD have worked together to create something called the “x86 Ecosystem Advisory Group,” which will focus on the most popular microarchitecture for desktop PCs. Both companies represent the vast majority of this ecosystem, so it is in their best interest to ensure it is prepared for the future. It is still a very unexpected announcement.
According to the press release from Intel, the group will focus on identifying new ways to expand the x86 ecosystem while maintaining compatibility between platforms. Such collaboration could simplify software development and create a platform that clearly communicates what is currently needed from this architecture, as explained in the PR statement.
The x86 architecture must be ready for future technologies, like AI, chiplet designs, and 3D packaging. A key aspect of this is likely the heterogeneous design of modern chips, so instead of working separately, this group could establish new standards and prepare the most popular PC platform for what’s next.
Pat Gelsinger has said that the x86 architecture is “on the cusp of one of the most significant shifts,” and the company is “proudly standing together with AMD and other founding members” while laying the groundwork for the future.
AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su has said that the company is “excited to bring the industry together to provide direction on future architectural enhancements and extend the incredible success of x86 for decades to come.”
