Quote:AdGuard v7.5 for Windows: DNS module and better tracking protection

AdGuard for Windows is the very first in the line of AdGuard products. It's been around forever and has seen countless updates. What more could we possible add there? Quite a lot, as it turns out, and you'll be able to make sure of it yourself in just a minute. Let's start with the headliner of the v7.5 update:

DNS module
  • Check out this article to learn more about DNS and how it works.

Now your DNS traffic is safer

This feature has been long present in some other AdGuard products, like AdGuard for Android. DNS module allows you to select any DNS server you like. There are multiple options:
  • From a list of recommended ones (including AdGuard DNS)
  • From the list of DNS providers in our Knowledge Base, where we have collected the most popular DNS providers and added a quick setup option
  • Or you can even add a custom one
Why would you want to do that? A few reasons. First of all, using a non-default DNS server will help protect your DNS traffic from the ISP’s and fraudsters’ interception. Many DNS providers support safe protocols like DNS-over-HTTPS and DNS-over-TLS. We strongly recommend using one of those, as it greatly improves your online safety.

Some DNS servers also have additional features, like ad blocking or protection from malicious websites. Check out the tooltips next to each DNS server to learn more about it.

Quote:As the summer fades away, the mood often goes down. We'd like to brighten up your day with a major AdGuard for Android update!

Let me say it right away — the most important change here is added compatibility with AdGuard VPN. It's especially topical since a big update of AdGuard VPN for Android is coming VERY soon. I want to save it for dessert, but if you're not the patient type, feel free to jump straight to it. For the rest, let's look at some slightly less exciting (but still exciting!) changes first.

Quote:New AdGuard update fixes page loading bug in Chrome v87

If you're a user of our app for either Windows, Mac, or Android, you must have noticed a very recent update. Or if you haven't — don't put it off and check for updates, especially if your browser of choice is Chrome. We rarely update all our apps at once, and every time we do, there's a good reason for that. This time the reason is as unpleasant as it is trivial: we caught a bug.

What happened

First of all, let me preface everything by saying that the bug is 100% fixed. If you don't care about the details, simply update your AdGuard and don't bother with anything, you'll be fine. And for more curious I'll explain a bit more.

Chrome browser compresses HTTP/2 requests, and for reasons yet unknown in the latest version (v87) sometimes it does it differently compared to its own regular way. We weren't prepared for that, and as a result from time to time users would face endless page loading, forced to refresh the page. And as if it wasn't weird enough, the issue occurred across all platforms, but mostly on Macs. Had that happened every single time for the majority of users, we'd catch the bug in no time. However, only some users got affected.

Was it a coincidence? Some kind of an experiment by Chrome devs carried out for a small percentage of users? We still don't know, but it prevented us from reproducing the problem on our test devices on demand and impeded the process of fixing the bug. Big thanks to all the good people from GitHub who sacrificed their time to provide us logs and other information. With their help we were able to dig to the root of the problem and ultimately eliminate it altogether.

Now, bugs are something that will happen no matter what when you develop software. There's just no way around that. If anything, we're proud of fixing it, considering unusual circumstances. But the biggest takeaway here is that sometimes we absolutely need community feedback to make things right. We encourage you to report bugs, send crash reports, and otherwise participate in the life of AdGuard community. Together we will achieve more and make Internet better for everyone.

We’ve added a new pseudo-class :is() and upgraded extended CSS to v1.3.8. :is() is a CSS pseudo-class function that comes in handy for writing large selector lists more compactly. Quote:AdGuard 4.1 for iOS:

Native DNS support

Long time ago scientists discovered an interesting phenomenon. While we typically think that what we most want is to actually get what we want, the most intense current of pleasure lies in looking forward to getting what we want. It’s been months since Apple added native DNS encryption support to iOS, and you might’ve thought that we at AdGuard just have been lazy not adding support it? Well, not at all! We’ve just been trying to follow science and provide you with as much pleasure as possible. Finally, the intensification period ends and catharsis begins!

So yeah, the most important thing this release features is native DNS support.

As you may remember, we already wrote that Apple started natively supporting encrypted DNS. Namely, two protocols were supported — DNS-over-TLS and DNS-over-HTTPS (DoT and DoH correspondingly). In that post we added a manual on how to set up and manage DNS profiles in AdGuard. Yet, the solution wasn’t so elegant.

In the new version, there are already three protocols supported (Regular DNS as well) and the method has become native not only to the iOS, but also to AdGuard. We have simplified the scheme: now you don’t need to download and install DNS profiles, it would suffice to enable Native implementation in AdGuard for iOS settings.
  1. Open AdGuard Settings > DNS protection > DNS implementation > Switch to Native.
  2. Toggle on DNS protection. You’ll see an instruction saying what to do next (Open System settings, go to General > VPN & Network > DNS and select AdGuard there).
The new method of setting up DNS isn't really superior to the one you're already familiar with, but it has one slight advantage: the DNS is handled by the system and not the app. This means that AdGuard doesn't have to create a local VPN. Sadly, this will not help you circumvent system restrictions and use AdGuard alongside other VPN-based applications — if any VPN is enabled, native DNS is ignored. Consequently, you won't be able to filter traffic locally or to use our brand new DNS-over-QUIC protocol (DoQ).

Quote:Do you know that feeling when your birthday's coming up and you aren't really sure what you want for a present? And then your auntie gifts you a pair of socks. They are fine socks, and you're even thankful because you haven't purchased a new pair in a while... You're just never truly excited about socks. Well, we have three digital pairs of socks prepared for you today.

And when I say socks, I mean updates. We've updated AdGuard for Mac, AdGuard for Android and AdGuard Home — and they all are mostly about bugfixes and 'polishing'. In case of AdGuard Home, the socks are even extra soft and have a real nice ornament, but more about it later.

The changelog of AdGuad v2.5.2 for Mac is meat and potatoes. It features the routine CoreLibs update that will move the overall filtering quality just a notch higher, some bugfixes, including dealing with a quite nasty crash. Oh, the Browser Assistant extension will now work in Edge! We also have some good news for our Dutch users: AdGuard is now fully tranlsated into Dutch! Graag gedaan!

Quote:Important! Starting with this update, AdGuard will only work on macOS 10.12+. Unfortunately, the older macOS versions do not have capabilities to support the advanced techniques we use in our filtering engine.

With AdGuard v3.6.1 for Android the story is very similar. The most notable thing about this update is that it acts as the first stepping stone towards v4.0 — there will probably be no v3.7.
And the changelog is all the usual suspects: CoreLibs update, a bug fixed here, a bug fixed there. Next!

The most intriguing of the three is the AdGuard Home v0.105.0 update. Prepare to activate your inner nerd if you're going to check out what's new: there's enough IT slang to scare away an average user. But if you're interested in AdGuard Home, presumably you know what you're getting yourself into, and in that case the new version has some goodies in store for you.

Among the major new features are:
  • Client ID support for DoH, DoT and DoQ
  • New powerful modifiers
    Quote:$dnsrewrite
    and
    Quote:$dnstype
  • An option to set up AdGuard Home as a DNScrypt resolver
No point venturing deeper into technical nuances here, just go to GitHub and bathe in the inline code blocks.

Quote:While we were preparing this post, a hotfix was released. You can read about changes in v0.105.1 here.

I hope that our 'socks' will fit you well! Check your AdGuard apps for updates and leave us a comment about what you liked or didn't like. See you soon with more news!
